Grand Central will donate 5% of sales at all cafe locations on Friday, March 12th to support immigrant rights in Oregon and Washington. Donations collected in Seattle will go to Northwest Immigrant Rights Project (NWIRP). In Portland they will go to Causa Oregon.
Causa, Oregon’s Latinx immigrant rights organization, works to improve the lives of immigrants through advocacy, coalition building, leadership development, and civic engagement. They recently created the Oregon Worker Relief Fund and the Oregon Small Enterprise Fund to distribute financial support to workers and immigrant-owned small businesses who have been unable to secure aid through federal relief programs due to immigration status. Last year, they helped pass a bill allowing Oregon drivers licenses to be issued regardless of immigration status. In 2018 they helped defeat a ballot measure that would have erased Oregon’s sanctuary status.
Northwest Immigrant Rights Project has been providing legal assistance and challenging unfair policies on behalf of Washington immigrants since 1984. They defend the rights of low-income immigrants in Washington through direct legal services, advocacy and community education. Their recent work centers on keeping families together and supporting access to citizenship.
Grand Central Bakery employees are also donating to these organizations and these funds will be matched dollar for dollar by the company.
Grand Central Bakery also supports environmental stewardship and workplace equality. Fundraisers will be held for both of these causes later in the year.
