We at Grand Central Bakery pride ourselves on supporting the local economy and practicing sustainability. Whenever possible, we give preference to local vendors and distributors for our ingredients. Not only do local products taste better, they're better for the environment! Check out our Ingredients pages for more information on our favorite local farms, ranches, dairies and purveyors.

Also, in 2010, Grand Central Bakery became a Food Alliance Underwriter. We are proud to support the Food Alliance in their quest "to define and promote sustainability in agriculture and the food industry, and to ensure safe and fair working conditions, humane treatment of animals, and careful stewardship of ecosystems."

In both Portland and Seattle, we are reducing waste by recycling and composting everything possible from our cafes and production areas. In several of our cafes, for example, after all is recycled and composted we can fit our daily waste into a pickle bucket! In all of our facilities, everything except non-recyclable metals and plastics gets separated out for high-heat composting - or in the case of Seattle's bread facility, gets donated to a local farm for pig feed!

In an effort to reduce our fossil footprint, Grand Central Bakery supports alternative sources of energy. In Seattle, we support wind energy with Seattle City Lights Green Up. In Portland, we are members of NW Natural's Smart Energy program (where we offset 380 tons of carbon dioxide yearly!), PGE's Cleanwind and Pacific Power's Blue Sky.

Also reducing our fossil footprint is our employees' dedication to alternate forms of transportation. From biking to walking to public transportation, Grand Central employees are doing their part to keep the environment (and themselves!) healthy.
